Murphy will start his 18th year as a gridiron mentor with the knowledge that he has yet to have a losing season. Last year he coached at Watterson.
Some 48 stalwarts turned out for opening practice. Of these, 14 earned letters last year.
"It's really too early to tell how things will stack up," he declared.
"The boys need fundamentals badly and that's what we are concentrating on." He terms Watterson and St. Charles the teams to watch for.
The boys practice from 9:30 to 11:30 and from 1:30 to 3:30.
He believes, he says, in keeping the boys together as long as possible during the season in order to build a sort of "esprit de corps."
He bases his football philosophy on the fact that an undefeated season he had a few years back, when he coached in the East, came about after the practice part of the season was spent at a camp, away from any outside inducements.
Three captains have been designated to carry the leaders' load this year: halfbacks Mike Hanf and Buddy Thomas and guard Ronnie Glass.
The only thing that Murphy cannot bemoan, is that since this is the high school's first year with a senior class, the team suffered no losses through graduation.
The road to the Hawks first winning season starts next Saturday when they host Big Walnut.
