Senatorial Caucusing.

At the last ballot in the Senatorial Caucus,
Friday night, Weller had 41 votes, lacking 8
votes of a nomination—49 being necessary to
a choice. The Caucus adjourned till Tuesday
evening next. In the meantime, it remains
to be seen whether these 8 votes can be ob-
tained. Where are they to be acquired?
They will not come from Denver's friends,
for they are firm, and have stood by him
from the first ballot, with an increase of one.
Baldwin has on the last ballot ten votes
which will never go for Weller, so he must
look for aid from another quarter. McDoug-
al has five votes on the last ballot which also
will never go for Weller, without a very
sudden and miraculous change. His only
resource, then, is the nine votes of Washing-
ton. These will elect him, if those votes
given him on the last ballot stick to him.—
But, if it be true that he polled his full real
strength on the first ballot, which was 38,
why, then, Washington's nine votes would do
him no good, for they would lack two votes
of nominating him. As to the probability of
Washington's votes going finally for Weller,
it has been loudly charged that Washington
was only working as "a capper" for Weller
and that he would finally throw all his influ-
ence for him. The San Francisco National
indignantly denies that such is the case and is
even disposed to get angry at the charge. It
says, time will show whether the charge be
true or false. True enough, it will. Certain
it is that, in all human probability, if Wash-
ington does not aid Weller, the latter will
not get to be Senator, and has no sure thing
of it even with his assistance. However, two
or three votes will be all that will be needed
in case the Washington votes should go for
Weller, to elect him, and these may be influ-
enced in various ways.

It is the opinion of certain shrewd politi-
cians below, that each of the candidates op-
posed to Weller in caucus will steadily hold
their own, to the last moment. If this be
true, there is no possibility of a nomination.

Event Details

In the last ballot of the Senatorial Caucus on Friday night, Weller received 41 votes, short of the 49 needed for nomination. The caucus adjourned until Tuesday evening. Analysis suggests Weller's path depends on securing votes from Washington's nine supporters, as other candidates' factions are unlikely to shift. Charges that Washington is supporting Weller are denied by the San Francisco National. Shrewd politicians believe opponents will hold firm, preventing nomination.
