To the Editor of the Globe.
As the city is about to issue bonds for improvements in various sections of the city, I desire to call the attention of our honorable city council and the legislative delegation to Fort street. This street, one of the principal thoroughfares in the city, is in a deplorable condition, but little improvement in the matter of grade, from what it was twenty years ago, while by the double street car tracks, it is made almost impassable for heavy loaded teams, and almost destroyed for driving purposes. The general government, in connection with Ramsey county, has recently, at great expense, bridged the Mississippi river at Fort Snelling, especially for the purpose of inducing the farmers of that section to bring their products to St. Paul, but owing to the terrible condition of Fort street this expenditure has been wasted, and trade naturally belonging to St. Paul driven elsewhere. The efforts of Alderman Ringwald to secure an appropriation to widen and put this street in good condition for both heavy hauling and pleasant driving, is strongly endorsed by the tax-payers along the thoroughfare, and they are emphatic in this demand that their claims shall not be overlooked in the legislation to be enacted at this session for bonds for improvements.
