Holiday atmosphere pervades the air of Main street in El Centro as crowds shop to Yuletide music.
Favorite Christmas airs and music are being broadcast at 15-minute intervals by remote control from the State street Christian church through its electric choir and sound system. The broadcasts will continue each afternoon and evening until Christmas eve, through an outlet near Sixth and Main.
The church, in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce and directed by the Rev. Mr. Edwin L. Carter, has opened its system to all of the churches wishing to furnish music and several have responded.
One of the favorites to be released over the system is the recording of "Silent Night" as played by a large music box over 100 years old. The girls' chorus and choir of the Christian church and soloists from the Baptist and Methodist churches have furnished popular arias and have recorded several selections to be played over the sound system of the Holtville Naval Air Base as well.
The Rev. Mr. Carter has led in the arranging of this music for down-town broadcast for several years. This year, through the use of recordings, the music is again made possible in spite of a shortage of Christmas records. The speakers on Main street are operated via a leased wire from the telephone company.
