On the first page of the last Voice, may be seen an article, containing some strictures on a few remarks of mine appended to a communication published Feb. 20th, and some queries raised.
As the writer, signed 'Inquirer' is 'not in favor of the frequent use' of the literal rod, we are probably not a great way apart in our views as to using it. In my article which he alluded to, I think I took the ground that the rod argument rarely if ever effected the object designed. I am still of that opinion; but do not deny that cases have occurred, where the 'oil of Beech' proved salutary. 'Inquirer' quotes from Solomon, in support of using the rod, and says he does not profess to be wise above what is written. Solomon said many wise things, but I apprehend my friend will not subscribe to all of the wise man's sayings and doings. According to common usage in Solomon's day, the oldest of a king's sons became successor to the throne. It appears from 1st Kings, 2d chapter, that Adonijah was older than Solomon, yet that Solomon succeeded to the throne; and because Adonijah asked Solomon's Mother to intercede for Abishag to be his wife, Solomon caused him to be put to death! Solomon also had about one thousand wives and concubines. What say, will you subscribe to these acts? Solomon caused the Ark to be drawn by a large Ox team. Does this show that people now must not ride in a steamboat or railroad car? If we are not authorised to follow the practices of Solomon, are we under obligation to practice his precepts any farther than they are inherently right? I will say nothing farther now than to ask all who see an improvement in the education and governing of children and youth, to let it be known.
Forward your views, friends.

Main Argument
the rod rarely achieves its intended effect in child discipline, and while solomon advocated it, his other actions and practices should not be emulated; precepts should only be followed if inherently right, and views on improved child governance should be shared.
