Amelia Island, lately captured by M'Gregor lies at the mouth of St. John's river, 60 miles north of Augustine. It is 13 miles long.
And 3 broad, is very early and has a fine harbour. This island, during the war, was a great resort for smugglers; and it acquired a considerable consequence by the illicit trade carried on between it and the neighbouring territory of the United States.

St. Augustine, upon which M'Gregor meditates an attack, is the capital of East-Florida, and lies upon the coast below Amelia. Its works of defence are respectable.
