AWFUL SLAUGHTER.

Terrible Deed of a Drunken Policeman in New York.

New York, Aug. 13. - Policeman Henry C. Hawley, of the tenderloin station, while in a fit of drunken rage, shot his wife and his mother, Mary Hawley, his son, four years old, and his six-year-old daughter. He then shot himself in the head. He was taken to Bellevue hospital, where he died soon afterward. The others were taken to New York hospital, where it was said that they would die. The only explanation of the crime was a statement made by Hawley's wife before she lost consciousness to the effect that "drink has caused all this."
