SPLENDID METEOR.
On Saturday evening last, at a few minutes after ten o'clock, the atmosphere being rather hazy, with little or no wind, the moon, having just passed its full, and not a cloud being visible a brilliant meteor passed horizontally in a northeasterly and southwesterly direction, leaving a large train similar to that of a rocket, which continued for about a minute and a half. About four minutes after the meteor passed, its explosion was heard, from the south like the discharge of four or five pieces of artillery, in rapid succession. The first appearance of the meteor was like lightning, unaccompanied by any noise, instantaneous, and in brightness surpassing the noonday sun. The globe, or body of the meteor was not seen by the writer, as he stood with his back to the east, on its appearance; but the train, which was at an elevation of about 40 degrees, and described an equal longitudinal length, was observed until it faded and entirely disappeared.
