Conferences Launched In Hope of Returning Textile Groups to Work
Rockingham, Oct. 3.--(AP)--Governor Gardner arrived here from Raleigh shortly after 2 p. m. today, and immediately went into a private conference with Mayor W. G. Pittman, supposedly in connection with arrangements which it is hoped will lead to settlement of a strike of operatives of three textile mills here.
The governor and the mayor spent a few minutes together and then the State's chief executive went into conference with four committees representing business men, strikers, loyal workers and mill executives.
It was not decided immediately whether the press would be admitted to the conference. This was the first question to come before the gathering.
Meanwhile, there was a great difference of opinion among observers as to whether the conference was for the prime object of settling the strike, which began August 22, or merely for discussing the general situation.
