TOLEDO, Ohio -- (ANP)-- Jersey No. 66 the one worn by Mel Triplett, the rookie fullback for the New York pro football Giants-has been retired at the University of Toledo. The number is the first ever placed in retirement in the Rockets' athletic annals. Triplett starred for the University of Toledo four years and was the fifth draft choice of the Giants. He also turned in an outstanding performance with the College All-Stars against the pro champions, the Cleveland Browns, in the annual all-star game last season.
TU's athletic director, Forrest (Frosty) England says he hopes to put the jersey, along with pictures and stories of Triplett's college athletic career, in a new trophy case in the school's field house.
Last year, Triplett, from Girard Ohio., and father of five children, set a Toledo rushing record by piling up 776 yards in 1954. He was named first-team fullback on the all-conference team of the Mid-American Conference.
