With the North and Southwest sections of Clarence Strait and So. Prince of Wales district opening Monday for seining, last areas to open, the pink salmon run was reported picking up.
Anan which opened last Friday with reported poor runs, was much better yesterday and Frederick Sound was said to be one of the bright spots.
Harold Heaton, Manager of Farwest operations here, said his plant had around 65,000 out of that area. He said Anan appeared to be getting progressively better.
Fisheries Agent Elmer Copstead reported the Anan opening, sort of a barometer for fishing in this area, was far below last year but that it appeared to be building up this week. The Radiant, with 4,000 was high boat on opening day. Others ran from virtually zero to a few hundred.
Since then the hauls have improved, according to reports.
The local cannery expected to have up around 14,000 cases to-night.
Season remains open until August 26.
