A NARROW ESCAPE. - Mr. J. M. Ward, who brought up the Rose Manning Opera Company from San Francisco, and left them at Victoria, came over, with his wife, in company with the Haverly Minstrels by the steamer Emma, which they chartered for the purpose in Victoria. While coming up the Sound, about fifteen miles from Seattle, at two o'clock A. M., Monday morning, berths all taken, as Mr. and Mrs. Ward were sitting on some baggage in the bow of the boat, she presently dropped asleep, and he stepped below for a moment. Before he returned, she awoke suddenly and fell overboard into the water. As soon as the mishap was discovered the greatest excitement prevailed after some delay boat was got off and started in search of the imperiled body. Meanwhile she had drifted nearly out of sight but was finally reached after having sunk twice and just as she was going down the third time and was almost gone. It appears that she was kept up by seal skin cloak had on buttoned so tight that retained the air and kept her afloat. The lady was rescued at length being prostrated from the effects of the shock.
