TRUMAN VS. INFLATION
He and his political associates having contributed more than any other group to the present inflationary price trend in the U. S., President Truman must have spoken tongue-in-cheek when he addressed the American Society of Newspaper Editors the other evening and urged them to support "proper" anti-inflationary steps.
"At the same time that taxes are being reduced, we are undertaking a program of assistance to foreign countries," said Mr. Truman. "We are also considering certain necessary additions to our national defense program. Both of these programs are of utmost importance, and we must have them. But they will result in strains on parts of our economy, which can add to inflation if we do not have proper controls."
There was a time, doubtless, when the public might have overlooked the stupendous irony of the above statement.
It is highly paradoxical in that it asks us to impose "police state" controls in Europe. Of course the controls sought by Mr. Truman are only "temporary, emergency" controls. But this is precisely what the Russians are told by the present Red masters. These latter claim that the "dictatorship of the proletariat" is only a transient phase of establishing the Socialist-Soviet state.
Our view is that a regimented nation is a doomed nation, whether regimented in the name of Communism or quasi-Socialism. The glory of our nation is the freedom and dignity of the individual citizen.
Why should we abolish it at home, in pursuit of a chimera overseas?
