Full Text

Ben Wade's Pluck.—The Radicals
praise Wade for his pluck. They say he
once called a southern senator a liar, and
next morning went into the Senate and
laid two pistols down before him upon his
desk. It certainly is an astonishing story
that a northern congressman should have
had the courage to do the like; but who
was the southern senator? Why not name
him? The story assumes that the affair
took place in public. We suppose it
is a falsehood from beginning to end, manufactured
to make a little popularity for
Wade among the northern masses, who,
denouncing the code of honor, nevertheless
make a hero of any man of their own
section who can screw up his courage to
the fighting point.
