PORTSMOUTH, March 4.

On Monday last, agreeable to notification, the freeholders and others, citizens of this town, assembled at the State House, and having made choice of Samuel Cutts, Esq. for their moderator, they proceeded to give in their votes for President, Senators, and Representatives. The poll was opened at 10 o'clock, A. M. and closed at 5 P. M. when the Town Clerk declared the votes to stand as follows:-

For President,
His Excellency John Pickering, Esq. 325
John Sullivan, Esq. 22

For Senators,
Hon. Pierce Long, Esq. 336
John Pickering, Esq. 325
Nathaniel Rogers, Esq. 287
John Bell, Esq. 273
Christopher Toppan, Esq. 272
Col. Samuel Sherburne, jun. 47
Nathaniel Peabody, Esq. 23
Peter Green, Esq. 16
Joseph Cilley, Esq. 12
James M. Gregore, Esq. 10

For Representatives,
Col. George Gains, 335
Col. James Sheafe, 300
Hon. John Pickering, 230
Col. Samuel Sherburne, jun. 180

The three gentlemen first mentioned in the Representatives list were declared duly elected to represent this town in General Court the year ensuing.

At the above meeting, upwards of 400 voters attended (from the venerable and aged sire down to the first stages of manhood) an instance never before known in this town. The greatest good nature was observed through the whole: and although a little anxiety appeared to rest on the brows of some, and inquietude on others; the natural effects of competition—yet at the close of the poll, each party returned to their respective homes, perfectly satisfied—the one with having gained their point, the other, with having manfully fought, made an orderly retreat, and pleased with the idea of returning with redoubled force to the charge.
