CURE FOR CASTRO

President Kennedy announced U. S. military strength would enforce a blockade in the waters surrounding Cuba this week. He said ships carrying war materials would be halted and they would be fired upon if they refused to submit to our inspection.

The action of our president is welcomed by most of us, but it was so long in coming forth. For many months Fidel Castro has been accepting Russian military aid while we stood idly by. He has maneuvered us into a diplomatic corner through our efforts to obtain the freedom of some prisoners from him.

Unfortunately Cuba is too close to our mainland, being less than a hundred miles from Florida. This proximity presents greater and more immediate problems than Berlin or Viet Nam.

The situation is extremely grave since the Russians have been fortifying missile bases on the island. We have finally arrived at a point of action--let us hope Castro will not attempt to overlook our ultimatum.
