DISTRESSING ACCIDENT.-Yesterday afternoon, about 1 o'clock, the horses attached to the carriage of Mr. Thomas Hargrove, ran off down Broad street, and on reaching the corner of Mayo, upset the carriage, injuring Miss Deterick seriously. We understand that Mrs. Hargrove, Miss Deterick, and three children had attended divine service at the First Baptist Church, and had just gotten into the carriage to return to Mr. H.'s corner 23d and Grace streets when the horses took fright, by the carriage running upon them, the pole having become detached, and before the driver could gain his seat, started off at a fearful pace. The conduct of the driver is said to have been most heroic. He held on to the horses until they had thrown and run over him, and even after the carriage had passed over his body, crushing and bruising him badly, he sprang to his feet and ran to the assistance of his mistress. The three children were but slightly injured by the upsetting of the vehicle, which was badly broken. The scene, as described by an eye witness, must have been a fearful one, and the wonder is, that not the ladies and children were not instantly killed, but that the driver even escaped with his life.
