Substance of a Letter from Dr. Rogers, of Philadelphia, to a gentleman in Providence, dated Nov. 30, 1803.
"It is truly gratifying to hear of the revival of our dear Redeemer's cause at Boston. From all quarters, and from all my numerous correspondents, it appears that the same precious interest is obtaining amazing accessions. Brother Richards, of Baltimore, writes me that Mr. Pope, of North Carolina, within the period of eighteen months, baptized upwards of 1300 persons; and that a son of his, aged twelve years, was licensed to preach: further southward, a Mr. Putnam had baptized 93 in one day, and in a few days after was to baptize 100. Dr. Furnam, of Charleston, in a letter, communicates good tidings relative to the works in Savannah and other parts of Georgia as well as in South-Carolina. Numbers had been baptized, and the work of grace was going on with power. He particularizes a religious concern in the town of Beaufort, and principally among people of the first rank. A judge, Clay, an excellent scholar, &c. had been converted, who has since been baptized, and is now engaged in proclaiming salvation by the cross. Yesterday week I received a long letter from brother Rhoades, of Somerset, in this state; he had then just returned from the Red-Stone Association; upwards of 3000 assembled to hear preaching, which continued for several days, commencing each day at eight o'clock, A. M. and ending just after dark, one preacher following another, without intermission, the people standing the whole time as if they were wedged in as to closeness, and nailed in as to attention. Many cried out under a sense of guilt, others were ascribing glory to God; opposers were smitten by the word, &c. In short, it was similar to the revivals in Kentucky. Brother Rhoades adds that the work is progressing eastward.—
Blessed be God we are not without some foretaste of heaven in this metropolis. We have a second church constituted and flourishing; they have nearly completed in the Northern Liberties a handsome brick meeting-house. During Mr. Ustick's illness, and since his death, I have been necessitated to officiate for the old church and since the latter end of March. I have baptized for the two churches, 39 persons in the rivers Delaware and Schuylkill, on two occasions at least, in the presence of 2000 spectators, and eleven candidates at each time. Between 20 and 30 in the city and Liberties have been baptized by other ministers. Two are to be examined this evening, whom, God willing, I shall baptize in the course of the week. Our Association was held at Cohansy; letters from 29 churches were read; to many of them there were considerable additions. Total 305 by baptism, and only 37 deaths. Among the baptized in Brandywine church, was a Quaker woman preacher, of great piety and excellent character; she had been a public friend for upwards of 20 years, and is now an astonishing advocate for the doctrine of free, rich and sovereign grace. Our brethren, also, in India, are performing wonders. Missionaries Carey and Chamberlain write me word that 15 Hindoos had been then (March 1st) baptized in the Ganges; among whom was a Bramins, or Hindoo priest. The work was going on—idolatry was dying away, and numbers flocking to Serampore, to inquire after this new way."
