One of Montana's early day residents, prominent in mercantile and freighting circles, W. M. Couch, now of Kansas City, Mo., is visiting old acquaintances and friends in Helena. Mr. Couch, in 1863, shipped groceries and other merchandise to the Territory and in job lots disposed of them at Virginia City. From 1864 to 1870 he made Helena his headquarters, and from this point was engaged largely in freighting. He is still interested in mining property in Alder gulch—auriferous ground that will require years of work to exhaust. Mr. Couch pronounces Helena a marvel in metropolitan growth and prosperity, and prophesies it will expand to the domains of a great city. It is believed he intends to make some important investments here.
