A project is started by Duane, for calling a Convention to form a new constitution for this degraded state. The present one has been in operation 18 years and is now considered as fairly worn out by the democrats. It is indeed a wonder that it lasted as long as it has considering the rude hands it has fallen into. In France they have had half a dozen in less time. A memorial to be presented to the Legislature is put in circulation for signatures. It states, as principal grievances, that 'the Senators are chosen for too long a period.' 4 years—that the governor has too much patronage and that Judges hold their offices during good behaviour, when they ought to be chosen annually.
