UKIAH, Calif., Jan. 16. (U.P.)—Gilbert F. Collie's shortlived escape from the Mendocino state hospital led authorities today to demand that the former Medford, Ore., blacksmith known as "the Gorilla" be returned to San Quentin prison to be hanged for one of the slayings he allegedly committed.
Collie sawed through three iron bars and slid down a rope made of bed sheets to escape from the state hospital for criminal insane. Ten hours later guards found him at Largo, near the Mendocino-Sonoma county line.
Following his conviction on murder charges, Collie was adjudged insane by a jury in Marin county, Calif. Hospital authorities have decided, however, that the prisoner now is sane. Under state law, he must be returned to San Quentin at the governor's discretion to be executed.
