Julia Marlowe, Stricken, May Have to Quit Stage
LOS ANGELES, Cal., Jan. 19.-Miss Julia Marlowe, the actress, who is suffering from a slight attack of appendicitis, will give up the stage for six weeks and leave today for New York, where she will undergo treatment and possibly an operation. This announcement was made last night by E. H. Sothern. her husband.
Miss Marlowe is not accompanied by her husband. E. H. Sothern, who is to continue his tour of California with the company. He is on his way to San Diego, where he is to appear.
On the advice of her physician. Miss Marlowe cancelled her engagements and started for New York. Mr. Sothern said that he will not know for six weeks whether or not she will have to retire from the stage. Miss Marlowe is the ranking actress in Shakespearean roles on the stage today.
Mr. Sothern made this statement:
"It is true that my wife is ill. She is suffering from an attack of appendicitis. It compels her to leave off our tour here and return immediately to New York. where she will be under the care of her own physician and will be ready for an operation if that proves necessary.
"Mrs. Sothern may be compelled to retire from the stage. but we will not know positively for six weeks."
