Full Text

If any thing can add to the disgust which all honorable and manly democrats feel at the folly and madness which have marked the proceedings of their Representatives in Congress, it must be the mean and lavish puffs which are so perpetually played off by the demagogues and scribblers of their party, on John Adams, J.Q. Adams, William Gray, and others—men, whom the same breath puffers have been in the continual practice for 15 years, until since the Embargo, of branding with every mark of guilt and reproach.—Whom they have a hundred thousand times proclaimed to be Tyrants, Traitors to their Country, Apostates, Aristocrats, British partizans, royalists, the advocates of standing armies, & per cent loans; alien and sedition bills, &c. &c.—In fine, let any man examine the Aurora, Chronicle, and papers of that stamp, during the twelve years Mr. Adams was in office; and he will see, that no epithets were too vulgar and degrading—no scurrility too coarse—and no charge of political crime too flagrant, to be lavishly bestowed on the Adamses—both father and son.

As to Mr. Gray he was always held by them in derision; and never spoken of but with a sneer.—Yet, these men are now toasted by these bespatterers, as "upright patriots" distinguished through all trials and changes'—and "men of principle and honor:" because they have advocated an Embargo system; which its authors are obliged to abandon with shame; without effecting a single object for which they pretended it was imposed! Alas! to what pitiful depths will not party spirit and party despair descend!—Cent.
