Postmaster Announces Openings Now For Career Federal Jobs
Mr. Baker announced the opening of a new Civil Service examination for clerks and carriers in the Detroit Post Office, announcing that in his instance not only will the examination be open to both men and women, but to 17-year-olds, as well.
"The minimum-age requirement has been reduced from 18 to 17" Postmaster Baker explained, "to afford the younger high-school graduates an opportunity to apply immediately for these attractive positions, along with their 18-year-old classmates."
There is no maximum age limit, and applications will be accepted from all Michigan residents who indicate willingness to accept appointment for duty in Detroit.
"This is a highly opportune time to embark upon a career in the United States Postal Service" Mr. Baker stated.
"Postal positions today offer more in the way of economic security, fringe benefits, diverse duties and promotional opportunities than ever before."
The Postmaster further announced that under a new policy just established at the Detroit Post Office, written tests for clerks and carriers will be scored and rated by the recently formed Post Office Establishment Board, rather than by the Chicago Regional Office, as was formerly the case. This will greatly expedite processing of the papers he explained, and applicants will be informed of their grades much sooner than in the past.
Applications are now available for the position, which offer the following:
1. Starting pay of $1.82 per hour, with 6 automatic annual increases.
2. Ten per cent additional pay for work performed at night.
3. 2 to 5 weeks paid vacation each year, and liberal paid sick leave.
4. Low-cost insurance benefits, and a generous retirement plan.
5. Uniform allowance.
Complete information and application forms may be obtained from the office of the Executive Secretary, Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners, Room 402, Federal Building, Detroit 33, Michigan.
