FRAUDULENT BILLS CAUSE MUCH STIR

Southern Railway Officials Excited Over Alleged Cotton Graft.

WASHINGTON, D. C., April 23.—A commotion quite out of the ordinary was created among officials of the Southern Railway by the announcement today of the failure of Knight, Yancey & Company, large cotton buyers in the South, doing business with Boston and Liverpool.

Conferences have been in progress throughout the day among the Southern Railway officials with a view to determine if possible of how deeply involved the system may be in what is alleged to be the issuance of fraudulent bills of lading on cotton shipments. At this time it is impossible for the company to say definitely how many, if any, fraudulent bills of lading have been issued or used in its name.
