Report of committee on military returns which was accepted in this house, referred in the senate to committee on that part of the message relating to the Militia.

Petition of Joel Pratt, &c., of 12th school district of Oxford, of John B. Scudder, of C. Newton, &c., returned from the senate with leave to withdraw, on account of neglect to record in the Secretary's office. Concurred.

Resignation of John T. Adams as Judge of Probate, accepted. Resolution passed appointing Asa Booth in his place.

Petition of C. Beckwith referred to committee on claims.

Committee on divorces reported on petition of Mary Ann Bird of Danbury against Douglas S. Bird, (an Irishman,) a bill in form divorcing her, and granting her the name Mary Ann Banks. The petition was read setting forth in rather amusing details how Mrs. Bird was taken in by the said Irishman, and beguiled into marriage, and how he abused her after marriage.

Mr. Beardsley stated that there were numerous witnesses of high character from Fairfield county, and that a very strong case had been made out. Bill passed.

Petition of S. Law a descendant of the Mohegan Indians, for exemption from taxation, and petition of Charles Wyatt of the same tribe, referred to Committee on Judiciary. Of Ripley &c. referred to Committee on Incorporations. Norwich Steamboat Co. referred to Committee on Incorporations. Remonstrance of towns of Norwich, Preston &c. referred to Committee on Roads. Samuel Hubbard to Committee on Judiciary. G. B. Ripley &c. for an Academy charter, to Committee on Incorporations. George Dantyquigin and others, (Mohegans,) referred to Committee on Judiciary.

Committee on Judiciary reported on the bill to repeal the act authorizing Notaries Public to administer oaths, and take acknowledgments of deeds, that said bill ought not to pass.

Mr. Wightman stated his reasons for having introduced the bill, and advocated its passage. Notaries public, though entrusted with these most important functions, do not hold their offices from the representatives of the people, but at the pleasure of the Governor.

Committee on divorces reported on petition of Lucy Gladding against Hiram Gladding a resolution divorcing her. The petition set forth a shocking list of abuses. The bill in form having been mislaid the report was laid for the present, on the table.

Committee on Judiciary reported the bill referred to them for an act respecting Notaries public, making their term of office only four years, and causing offices of all present notaries public to be vacated in June 1836. Read and laid on the table.

Petition of Joel Platt (now recorded) with the remonstrance against it referred to committee on New Towns and Probate districts.

Mr. Burrall observed that holding the office of Notary public he should not express himself on the bill at large, but objected to the repeal of the whole act because the second section makes the only provision which we have for taking depositions and acknowledgements where persons in other States and countries were concerned.

Mr. Wightman replied.

Mr. Sterling (from the committee) very forcibly exhibited the value and convenience of the present law, in cases where the deposition was to be taken out of the State or Union.

Mr. Wightman replied again, and moved to lay on the table. Laid on the table.

Committee on divorces reported a resolution to summon the respondent to the petition of Julia S. Babcock.

Mr. Beardsley stated the character of the petition, in a very effective manner; and after a moment's debate between Messrs. Smith of New Milford and Boardman as to the legality of the resolution, it was passed.

Resolution which was passed in this house referring that part of the Governor's message relating to communications received from the governments of the southern states respecting incendiary publications, to a joint select committee, rejected in the senate. Committee of conference, Messrs. Rockwell and Clark of Lebanon.

Resolution read removing David Baldwin from the office of Sheriff of Fairfield Co. On motion of Mr. Rockwell, laid on the table, and made the special order of the day for Thursday 19th May, at eleven o'clock.

Resolution to inquire into the expediency of making the private property of stockholders answerable for the debts of corporations, read and after some remarks in its favor from Messrs. Clark of Lebanon and Beardsley—passed.

Resolution instructing the Treasurer to sell the stock owned by the state in the Hartford, Phenix, and New Haven Banks, read, and after some remarks by Messrs. Burrall and P. Smith, passed.

Petition of New Haven and Milford turnpike company, referred to committee on roads and bridges.

Other petitions before presented and withdrawn to be recorded, now received again and referred to appropriate committees.

Bills passed making appointments for Tolland county. John Fitch, chief judge of county court. Benjamin Pinney, associate judge do.; Zelotes Long, do. Judges of Probate—John Martin, Mansfield; Rodolphus Woodruff, Stafford; Orrin Holt, Tolland; Benj. Pinney, Ellington; Cyrus Mann, Hebron; Orson Hill, Somers.

Mr. Sterling moved that when the house adjourn, they adjourn to meet at two o'clock this afternoon. Motion not passed. Affirmative 86. Negative 104.

Mr. Niles of Windsor, moved that three o'clock this afternoon be the hour to which the house adjourn. Messrs. Johnson, Hungerford, and P. Smith objected, and the motion was withdrawn.

Bill giving Superior Courts jurisdiction in certain cases. Read first time.

Bill prohibiting the circulation of bank-notes of a less amount than five dollars. Read first time.

Bill allowing witnesses one dollar a day, and five cents per mile. Read first time.

Bill regulating time of holding Courts in Middlesex county read first time.

Petition of Chloe Markham—referred to committee on State Prison: of Naugatuck Manufacturing Co.; of Jabez L. White: of Asa Chilson—referred to Committee on Incorporations.

Resolution passed to appoint a joint select committee on that part of the Governor's message which relates to the surplus revenue of the U. S. and to the national defence.

Bill to correct a mistake in the printed statutes—read first time.

Resolution passed to appoint a joint select committee on that part of the Governor's message relating to the subject of slavery.

Petitions of Richard Botsford, N. B. Martin, Thomas B. Worcester—presented and referred.

Committee on Taxation—White of the Senate, Burrall, Roberts of East Hartford, French, Beardsley, Clark of Lebanon, Delap, Burr, Newell.

Committee on the act re admission of Electors—Smith of New Milford, Hubbard, Bradley, Stark, Wilcox, Patten of Voluntown, Wightman and Newell.

Bill concerning appeals from Courts—read second time.

Bill regulating times of holding Courts in Fairfield Co.

Adjourned to nine o'clock tomorrow morning.
