Annual Playground Season Opens

The fifth annual playground season will open for Newington youngsters at five locations today, Wednesday, July 6 at 10 a.m. Playground activities will be held Mondays through Friday from 9 to 12 and 1:30 to 4 at Northwest, Elizabeth Green, New Meadow, Elm Hill and Churchill Park. The Churchill playground will be for Southeast area youngsters. It is being held there this year due to the school construction at Southeast. Edward Donohue, playground co-ordinator, has arranged an interesting list of activities for youngsters to enjoy. The first week will include a mask parade and a checker and chess tournament and horseshoes. The trampoline will not be brought to the playground the first week. The first week's craft projects will include name tags and bracelets. The supervisors will be registering children all week. All school children from those who attended kindergarten this year to 15 years can register. Pre-school children must be accompanied by an adult or a brother or sister old enough to be responsible for them. Staff assignments for the summer will be Northwest; Susan Somers and Donald Woods; Elizabeth Green, Bruce Sherwin and Karen Paullin; New Meadow, Vincent Madden and Judith Neumann; Elm Hill, Kenneth Sullivan and Linda Nicholson; Southeast, Fred Larson and Jo-Anne Kuenkler. A well rounded program has been planned for the entire summer which will include a wild west day; a bicycle rodeo; a peanut hunt and a dog show sponsored by the makers of Ken-L-Rations. All persons interested in being junior leaders may register at the playgrounds.
