Full Text

Sept. 8. In the Leyden Gazette we find the following Intelligence, dated London, Aug. 28.

"Some Dispatches which M. Buy received the 14th instant, have occasioned several Councils to be held at St. James's, and divers Conferences between the King's Ministers. The Court still appears resolved to insist upon the absolute Possession of all North-America, including Louisiana, as the most effectual Means to prevent, for the future, all Disputes between the two Nations about that Part of the World. The French, it is said, shall be allowed a Place in Newfoundland for curing their Fish, but they will not be permitted to fortify it. As to the American Islands, the Court, it is pretended, will consent to the Restitution of Guadaloupe, upon Condition that France renounce, for ever, all Claims or Titles to the neutral Islands of St. Vincent, Dominico, St. Lucia, and Tobago, in favour of the British Crown. We are also told that France will agree to demolish the Fortifications of Dunkirk on the Sea Side; but she does not explain herself with regard to Ostend, Nieuport, and other Places in the Netherlands; an Object which our Court has very much at Heart, as well for the Interest of our Commerce, and the Safety of our Coasts, as to prevent any Violation of the Barrier Treaty. Moreover it is said, that Belleisle will be exchanged against the Island of Minorca."
