First Dollar Give to Fight Cancer Came from Mrs. Waring
By MRS. W. A. SCOTT, SR.
"When the Women's Field Army was launched in 1936, the first person enrolling in its ranks was Dr. Fitzbutler Waring, president of the National Association of Colored Women. The dollar Dr. Waring contributed is now framed and hangs on the wall of the office of Mrs. Marjorie B. Illig, national commander of the Women's Field Army of the American Society for the Control of Cancer.
Much of this information is taken from Dr. C. C. Little's press service. Dr. Little is managing director of the American Society for the Control of Cancer, with headquarters in New York.
Cancer is an old disease-has been known since ancient times and is found in all animal life.
Any sore that does not heal; persistent indigestion; any irregular bleeding or discharge; any unusual lump or thickening are some of the early signs of cancer.
The skin, rectum, stomach, mouth, breast, and uterus are the places where cancer strikes most often.
Pain is a LATE symptom of cancer and often is not felt until the disease has advanced beyond hope of cure. Cancer steals up on its victim. Watch for any possible symptom.
Cancer is not hereditary. Cancer is not "catching." Cancer can be cured if taken in the early stages.
Fear and ignorance and a desire "to keep it secret" have largely contributed to the great death rate among cancer patients. To have cancer is no disgrace. Ignorance and fear must be overcome by education. There are only three cures for cancer—surgery, the oldest cure; X-Rays discovered in 1895 and radium found effective in 1903.
Warning is given against quacks and get-well-quick "cures." Cancer must be treated by a recognized physician.
There are twelve hospitals qualified for competent treatment of cancer in Georgia. Information may be had at the Georgia Division of the Women's Field Army in Atlanta. The Medical Association of Georgia and the Georgia State Department of Health.
