On Thursday last, at the superior court holden in this town, his honor judge White presiding, came on for trial a case of some interest and much delicacy. This was an action for breach of promise of marriage, wherein Miss Elizabeth Richards, by her guardian and next friend Mr. George Richards, was plaintiff, and Mr. Wm. Hardage Lane defendant. The damages were laid at 10,000 dollars. The case was opened by R. H. Henderson, esq. and the defendant was heard in reply by his attorney Alfred H. Powell; after which the evidence was examined, and the case submitted to the jury without an argument. [It appeared in evidence that Miss R. was averse to bringing the present suit, and that her affections had never been placed upon the defendant.]
The jury retired for a short time, and returned with a verdict of 16 dols. 66 cents damages; being under the impression that this amount was necessary in order to carry the costs.
For the plaintiff, Messrs. Richard H. Henderson, Lewis P. W. Balch, and Robert I. Taylor.
For the defendant, Messrs. Richard H. Lee, Wm. Chilton, Thomas Swann, Alfred H. Powell, and S. Blincoe.
