Full Text
The Whig National Convention.
A condensed report of the proceedings of this body will be found in our paper to-day. Up to the latest accounts no nomination had been made, nor is there a single indication, upon which to base a speculation, as to who will be the candidate. Of this however, we are certain, that no man, who is not in every way worthy of the confidence and support of the Whig party—not of the North, the South, the East, or the West, but of the whole Union—will be presented as the standard bearer in the approaching contest. Whoever he may be, we feel that he will be such an one as we can rally around, confident that in his hands we can place the honor of our country, the sacred institutions upon which are based our rights as Americans, and the great principles of the Whig party, without the shadow of a doubt or fear. Our candidate, be he whom he may, will not be the result of chance, nor will he be selected on account of his obscurity. The choice will be dictated by wise and prudential counsels, and the best man will be selected. Of the ultimate success of the Whig candidate, if supported by the full strength of the party, there cannot be the slightest doubt. The interests of every class of our citizens, the character of our country at home and abroad, the permanency of our republican institutions all demand that the government of this country be in the hands of Whigs, and these demands will be met. Right and truth though clouded and down trodden for a time must eventually triumph.
