CHICAGO, Oct. 4.- Capt. Porter, of the government secret service yesterday found a number of clever imitations of custom stamps, used on imported cigars. The general appearances of counterfeit is excellent. The difference is that on the original are the words, "manufactures of imported tobacco," and on the counterfeit are the words, "manufacturer of imported tobacco." The bogus stamps are made by Schumacher and Ettlinger of New York, and are not used to evade payment of duty, but are posted upon boxes containing the inferior domestic goods, in order to delude the purchaser into the belief that he is buying the genuine Havana weed.
The firm will be prosecuted.
