Full Text

Grant sent Phil. Sheridan down to New Orleans to preserve the peace, and as soon as he got there he kicked up a devil of a muss and then went to laying the blame on somebody else. He knew by the popular outburst of indignation all over the North that he had put his foot in it, and now he is not only undertaking to craw-fish, but is absolutely attempting to lie out of the scrape. Common reason would teach any one that his bombastic dispatches to the Secretary of War, containing charges of wholesale conspiracy and outlawry by the white people of the South, are a tissue of falsehoods, and that the unanimous protests and denials of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, the Board of Trade and the Louisiana clergy were true to the letter. There stands the unsupported word of Sheridan, Grant's military satrap, against the whole capital, dignity, respectability, brains and christianity of a sovereign State; and yet there are found men laying claims to candor and honor who affect to believe the former! Out upon such fraud and hypocrisy! Sheridan is fairly caught in a lie and must stand abashed and dishonored before the civilized world.
