BENEFIT OF PRAYER.

While the Christian continues steadfast in prayer, with not only his hands but his heart raised to heaven, and fixed there, the spiritual enemies of his soul—lust, love of the world, and such like—are kept at bay or conquered. But as soon as his hands drop, as soon as he ceases to be prayerful, they crowd around him, overpower him, and beat him to the ground. And as he is, from the natural weakness of his faith, unable at times to bear himself up, his relations and his friends ought to be constantly praying for him; that as Moses' brethren, Aaron and Hur, supported his hands when he could no longer do so himself, so may Christian friends support each other in times of lukewarmness or worldly prosperity.-Scott.
