THE CHIEF JUSTICESHIP.

New York, April 1.—A Washington special says that prominent democratic senators are of the opinion that the president will promote one of the present associate justices of the supreme court to the place made vacant by Judge Waite's death, and appoint a democrat of middle age to the associate justiceship.

There is a growing impression among republican members of the senate that President Cleveland will nominate an ex-confederate to succeed Chief Justice Waite. This impression grows out of efforts which southern men are making to secure the appointment of a representative from that section to the existing vacancy.
