JUSTICE.
Our neighbor of the Journal, in his anxious efforts to make the Van Buren movement appear not "essentially a whig movement," says, in reference to Van's past acts, his free soil views, &c.—
"This may make him a very good independent democrat, but we do not see how it makes him a whig."
As though any evidence of whig principles (?) were required in a candidate to receive the support of whigs. Did they not go for Tyler "without a why or wherefore?" Did they not vote John P. Hale into the Senate, of whom they had sung there was not water enough in the ocean to wash him clean enough to be a whig? And is not one of their candidates—their southern candidate—for the presidency, a man who, though he avows himself to be a whig, says he is not an "ultra whig," and will not if elected be bound by the principles or usages of the whig party? Fudge, about whig principles being at all essential to whig support! All experience proves that the whig party would just as readily swallow the whale as Jonah. The Journal editor knows the Van Buren movement, beyond the borders of New York, is to all intents a whig movement. It sees the hand writing on the wall—that it is death to Taylor beyond hope, and trembles at the dubious prospect.
