CONSTANTINOPLE, January 10.

Syria and Egypt are now again become the theatre of war. The first division of the English fleet and land forces is now arrived on the coast of Syria, Admiral Keith has notified to the Captain Pacha, that he had landed in the Bay of Marmora with fifty transports, on board of which was General Abercrombie. The other half of the expedition was immediately expected. The English Ambassador here, Lord Elgin, has received the same intelligence. English commissioners have been sent to the principal trading places in the Levant, to procure provisions for the English fleet; 2000 oxen and great quantities of provisions have been bought up at Smyrna. Considerable sums of money have been remitted hither from England, to make similar purchases.

It is said the French force in Egypt amounted to 13,000 men, and that the number of their auxiliaries, which consist of Copts, Arabs and Mamelukes, may be estimated at 15,000. In Alexandria there is a garrison of 2500 men; in Alexandria one of 2000; and in Cairo, one of 2000. Various other posts have garrisons of 600, 300, or as low as 10 men.

The report that a mutiny had taken place in the month of November, in the camp of the Grand Vizier, and that he himself was in danger of his life, is unfounded. The report originated in the circumstance, that the troops of the Pacha of Tripoli, in Syria, who has the same name with the Grand Vizier, being dissatisfied with him, drove him from his camp. The Ottoman Generalissimo, who was encamped at Jaffa, waiting the arrival of the English, has now deposed this Pacha.

The preparations in the arsenal here still continue: but it is said, that only a part of our naval force will join the English expedition against Egypt. Our government appears to be uncertain with respect to the measures it shall adopt on this occasion, as Russia views with dissatisfaction the expedition against Egypt.

Admiral Keith, it is asserted, has taken some French ships that were escaping from the harbour of Toulon, on board of one of which was citizen Tallien.

The Porte has laid an embargo on all the ships and property of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli, in the harbours of the Levant, because these States refuse to declare war against France.

The first accounts of the disturbances in the camp of the Grand Vizier, in which his name was confounded with that of the Pacha of Tripoli, were unfounded, but some time afterwards unpleasant events took place.

The Grand Vizier had requested that the sum of 2000 purses might be sent him by our government, to pay his army, and to defray other expenses of the war, but he received only 500. When this money arrived, a part of the troops drove away the guards, and made themselves at once masters of it. The Grand Vizier, who attempted to prevent this, was nearly killed by the mutineers, and saved himself with difficulty under the protection of the Janizaries. The Grand Vizier is since gone to Damascus.

In order to facilitate the landing of the English in Syria and Egypt, the Porte had laid an embargo on all foreign vessels at Smyrna, Scio, &c. to take troops and provisions on board for the English. The Russian ships alone declined this service.

The Ambassador from Algiers is imprisoned here, in consequence of that State having concluded a peace with France. The embargo which has been laid on the ships of Algiers, &c. at Smyrna and other ports, has caused a great sensation here. It is reported here this day, that the French have obtained a victory over the English, on the coasts of Syria and Egypt, but no official accounts of that event have yet been received.
