Poetry.

From the Balance.

Apostrophe to the Shades of WASHINGTON and HAMILTON.

TO move the vast machinery of state,
To rule her destinies and guide her fate,
Columbia call'd her fav'rite, godlike son,
The matchless man, th'immortal WASHINGTON.

From Vernon's groves comes forth th' obedient sage;
The pride; the glory, the wonder of the age:
With modest hand he grasps the destin'd helm,
To steer, thro' untried seas, the mighty realm,

Next him, a youth, his country's pride and boast--
His head a Senate, and his arm a host--
Illustrious HAMILTON, whose mind could change
Chaos to order; and whose eye arrange
A nation's commerce, finance, strength and laws,
Making the common weal the common cause.

Illustrious shades! if sentries of the sky
Permit the act, glance down the approving eye:
Behold the fruit of all your toil and pain--
Behold the sons who yet your creed maintain.
