fact remains that fewer Indians are finding employment these days of strife in South Africa.

LEADER CONVICTED
The secretary of the Cape Town passive resistance movement was arrested Nov. 26 on the charge of residing in the Cape Town province without a permit. He was convicted and sentenced to a month of hard labor. However, the sentence was suspended on the grounds that he leave Cape Town province by Dec. 31.

At Port Elizabeth an Indian purchased a plot of land in an obviously European area. He knew that the area was restricted but bought it because the municipality refused to pass plans for alterations in his property. Non-Europeans can make the purchases but the confirmations of the city council must be secured before any sale becomes final. This is tantamount to the American practice of restrictive covenants.

EMPTY VICTORY
One of the bad reactions to the defeat of J. C. Smuts at the UNO is the fact that the National party of South Africa has gained prestige in the local political affairs. In South Africa the United Party, the party of Mr. Smuts, is considered liberal, if such a statement can be made about any government that discriminates against black people. It is even suggested that the Indian victory at the UNO might develop to be an empty victory. This, however, remains to be seen.

Whether the decision of the UNO will influence the treatment of the Negroid peoples is highly doubtful. The administrator of Transvaal province lends credence to this point of view when he recently said, "This is a national question, and I make bold to say that white South Africa will be ready to resist with all the means and powers at its command any interference with its domestic affairs."
