To the Editor:—It is, I believe, publicly rumored that the admirable oration delivered on the 4th of July last, at Hedgesville, by Dr. G. A. Hammitt, of this county, was not a production of his own, but the same as one delivered several years ago in New York, by a Mr. Forrester. Now, sir, is it reasonable to suppose that Dr. Hammill, whose talents are spoken of so highly, would be guilty of so disreputable a thing as plagiarism? Would he impose in such a manner upon the people? I for one say, let him have his Oration published exactly as he delivered it in Hedgesville, and then the falsity of a rumor calculated to injure him can be established.

Main Argument
dr. g. a. hammitt should not be accused of plagiarism in his hedgesville oration, as his talents make it unlikely; publish the speech to disprove the injurious rumor.
