GEN. C. H. HODGES GOING TO RETIRE

NEW YORK, Dec. 29.—(AP)—Gen. Courtney H. Hodges, 61-year-old First Army commander, will retire from the Army next month. He will live in San Antonio, Tex.

Hodges, who led the First Army in its sweep across France and Germany in the recent war, becomes 62 Jan. 5. He is required to retire before the last day of January.

Holder of Distinguished Service awards won in both World Wars, Hodges has been commanding general of the First Army, with headquarters at Governors Island, since July, 1946.
