FOR THE MASSACHUSETTS SPY.

Mr. Editor-Although not delegated to recommend to the citizens of this county whom they shall elect to represent them in the Senate of the next General Court, we trust we shall be, as a legislator would say, " in order,"if we venture to suggest reasons why some of the candidates nominated should be preferred to others, or why we should ourselves prefer other candidates than those nominated. With this view we beg of you to name as candidates the Hon. John W. Lincoln, "Joseph Davis, Dr. Josian Howe, of Templeton, James Draper, Esq. of Spencer, and George A. Tufts, Esq. of Dudley

Our reasons for preferring this list of candidates are shortly these : Col. Lincoln has been long accustomed to the business of legislation, and if there ever was a time when the State needed firm, intelligent, and experienced men in its councils, it is the present." Col. Lincoln is known to be most indefatigable in the performance of the duties of any post or office he assumes; and we speak advisedly when we say, that no one has labored more faithfully than he since he has been a member of either branch of the Legislature. He is a practical farmer, and has uniformly stood by the rights of that class of men when they have been assailed, and if proof were wanting of this, we could refer to facts and instances which would convince even the enemies which his firmness has raised up against him. He was, furthermore, a member of the last Senate, and, not having declined. there can be no reason why the figure of a few should operate to deprive us of his services. Of Col. Davis it is unnecessary to speak in this place. The disposition of the public to re-elect him is too manifest to need any other argument in his favor. Of Dr. Howe, we need only say that we know him to be a firm friend of the National and State Administrations, a judicious and decided man, and one whose talents and experience entitles him to the confidence and support of the electors of the county. As a question of no ordinary importance has been raised in this county in regard to the division of it. we have been induced to believe that a majority of the Senators should reside in such parts of the county as would secure a fair and impartial expression of the public sentiment. We have, for this reason, selected a line nearly parallel with the proposed division line of the county, and recommended three of the foregoing names in reference to this; while we have selected one gentleman from the north, and the other from the south part of the county. In the westerly part we have named James Draper, Esq., who has been heretofore passed over to give place, in some cases, to men less qualified than he for that office. His age, experience, decision of character and intelligence, are known to be such as to render him, in every way, worthy of the office to which we have recommended him; and if any regard is to be had to the claims of the several towns in the county, in behalf of their citizens, for a proportionate share of offices and honors, we think that a town of the wealth and respectability of Spencer is entitled to its due weight and consideration.

The last gentleman, and, by the way, the only legal gentleman, named, is well known to be a lawyer of a highly respectable standing in his profession, a man familiar with the several interests of the people of the county, and of a firmness, and integrity which will insure his prompt and able support of those interests.

And we will only add, that, with such a representation as we have herein advocated, Worcester county need not fear that her honor will be sacrificed, or her rights disregarded.
