Full Text

D. A. J. Upham has been re-elected Mayor of the city of Milwaukee. The events of the past few weeks in that city are known, and the position of the Mayor with reference to those events, is known. It was a painful and humiliating one to all friends of the peace and good order of the city, and his ejection from his place seemed to be demanded by the best interests of the city. But few abroad, we suspect, had any idea that he would be re-elected, and the result will not prove advantageous to the reputation of that young city. But it is "instructive to remark" the manner in which this has been brought about. Mr. Upham was nominated by a democratic convention. In accepting the nomination he stated distinctly, that he did it only because of the late events with which he was connected. To vindicate Mr. Upham then and sustain burglary, riot, &c., became at once a sacred party duty, and we find the Wisconsin, the Commercial, and all other supple tools and slaves of mere party, coming up to the support of Mr. Upham with alacrity. This is the way it was done, and this is the way democracy, which should be the parent of all that is noble, and generous, and true, is perverted by knaves and their tools to the basest ends. It will be a happy time for Milwaukee, when her press gets into the hands of men instead of the poor, cringing slaves, which, with one honorable exception, now control them.
