LONDON, January 2.

Extract of a letter from Ostend, Dec. 18.

"Much damage has been done among the shipping by the late tempestuous weather; two vessels laden with corn from Flushing to this port have been lost: the first was drove ashore about a quarter of a mile to the eastward of the harbour and every soul perished; several people were assembled at a very short distance from the wreck, but could not afford the unhappy sufferers any assistance; and what rendered the distressed scene more dreadful, was, that among the agitated spectators, a poor man, who expected his wife home, saw her, with her child in her arms, waving signals of distress; his feelings cannot be better conceived than described: at last he beheld them overwhelmed in the deep, and would have plunged himself into the waves, had not the by-standers prevented him. The other vessel in a few minutes made the entrance of the harbour with the greatest difficulty: but at the moment the unfortunate crew thought themselves secure, she struck against the West Jetty; three of the crew, who were English, jumped on the piles and were saved: the Capt. and his wife likewise got on the piles: but the poor woman, alarmed for the safety of her child, then on-board, entwined her arms round her husband's neck, and they both unhappily perished. The vessel soon after came on shore, and an intrepid English sailor, at the hazard of his life, gained the wreck, and brought the child from the cabin safe. Mr. Bent, butcher, whose humanity cannot sufficiently be praised, took the poor orphan, and adopted it as his own."
