During her stay at Fort Leavenworth, the officers learned that an express had arrived on that day from Gen. Kearney's army, but without bringing any news of special interest. The progress of the expedition was considerably retarded by the bad condition of the horses—many of which had given out. The Rangers were travelling at the rate of twenty-five to thirty miles per day.
We notice that the correspondent of the Reveille estimates the number of men then under the command of Gen. Kearney, at 1657. Two companies of dragoons under Captains Sumner and Cook, followed very shortly after his departure from Fort Leavenworth, increasing his force two hundred more. This number will be further increased by the addition of the Mormon infantry, some three or four hundred of whom were to leave the Mormon camp under Capt. Allen, U. S. Army, to attach themselves to Gen. Kearney's command. It is now understood, that Gen. Kearney will halt at Bent's Fort, for the purpose of recruiting his men, and to await the arrival of Col. Price's regiment, 1,000 strong. When united, his whole force will be about 3,200 men—a force sufficient, under ordinary circumstances, to resist any army which may be sent to meet him, and quite equal to the conquest of New Mexico, if no re-inforcements are sent into that department from other districts.
