COUNTY CONVENTION.
From the last Richmond Palladium we learn that most of the Townships in this County, on the 3d instant, appointed Delegates to attend a Whig County Convention to be held in Centerville on SATURDAY, the 29th inst. No Delegation. We hope this matter will be attended to, delegates, we believe, were appointed for this Township and to the end that it may, we would name Saturday, the 22nd instant, as a suitable time for holding our Township meeting to appoint Delegates to the County Convention. If there are any other Townships in the County where primary meetings have not yet been held, we would earnestly suggest the importance of attending to the matter without delay.
We are not apprised of the number of Townships in which delegates have been appointed to the proposed County Convention. Several however have attended to that duty, and by resolution recommended the 29th inst. as an appropriate time for the assembling of the Convention. As that time has been named by the people in their primary meetings, we do not feel at liberty to suggest a postponement of the time; although we fear all of the Townships will not be represented. We hope however that they will not lose any time in convening and make a selection of delegates. Will not the committees of vigilance in the different townships take the matter in hand, and ensure a full attendance of delegates from each and every Township in the county. The success which has attended the Congressional nomination in promoting the unanimity and harmony of the friends of Whig principles should incite us to endeavor to bring about a similar happy result in our county ticket. If we succeed in the election of Whigs, the Whig party must be united, and to maintain that unity it is indispensably necessary that we should have a fair, honorable and unbiased expression of the will of the party, and a convention has been deemed the most expedient plan by which to bring about that expression, therefore our success, in a great measure, depends upon the character of the Convention which shall select the candidates.
We need not remind the reader of past defeats and betrayals. They are fresh in the minds of all, and the blush of shame has scarcely yet left the mind of those who were cajoled by the false promises of a Senator who has proven himself utterly unworthy the confidence heretofore reposed in him. Let not old Wayne be again subject to the degradation of assisting in the election of men to office who will misrepresent the will and wishes of a large majority of her people. We earnestly but respectfully urge the Whigs throughout the country to give this subject their early and energetic attention.
