Education Association 'To Avoid Biased Cities

ST. LOUIS, MO. - Hereafter the National Education Association can carry its conventions only to cities which "provide a maximum degree of equality," according to an amendment passed by the Association's 29th representative assembly meeting here last week.

Earlier a proposed amendment which would demand the placing of NEA conventions in cities "where it is possible to make provisions without discrimination for the housing, feeding and seating at meeting and general welfare of all members of this association," was deleted to include the maximum equality phrase.

The representative assembly amended the original proposal after retiring President Andrew D. Holt informed the assembly that the association's board of Directors, through study and investigation, concluded that "no city in the United States could meet the conditions of the suggested amendment."

Dr. Holt told the educators that moved by careful consideration and an undivided support of the spirit of the proposed by-law, the board voted to urge a change which would stay NEA conventions to locations where a "maximum degree of equality" exists.

The St. Louis convention marked the 88th Annual Meeting of the NEA and its 29th Representative Assembly.

In attendance at the assembly were almost 4,000 representatives who came to St. Louis from state and local associations in nineteen states and Washington, D.C.

States listed were New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Pennsylvania.
