IS THIS A WISE PRACTICE?
The Bonners Ferry papers carried an announcement last week to the effect that an innovation would be started in the Bonners Ferry schools this year. It is that the entire freshman class will be given a course in physical development. This, we believe, will prove a wise practice. In spite of the growing popularity of high school athletics, the criticism is sometimes heard that football, basketball and similar sports give systematic athletic training only to a comparatively few of the total number of students. The well-meaning critics suggest that the athletic program ought to include classes in physical development for all the pupils. The benefits of corrective gymnastics could thereby be given to all students who may be in need of it.
It is interesting to note that some of the nationally known sports writers, in their articles descriptive of the Olympic games at Berlin, advanced the thought that if America is to continue a prominent contender in those games it will have to take up in a larger way the physical development of the on-coming generations, and do it by a mass method.
