The New Haven Palladium makes the following flattering comments upon the Annual Address before the Board of Medical Examiners of Yale College, delivered last week by our fellow citizen, Dr. J. G. Beckwith—
'The Valedictory Address,
by
Mr. H. Williams of Hamilton College, was characterized, as a composition, by correct taste and elegance of style—and was delivered with a sensibility and modesty becoming the occasion. The whole creditable alike to orator and those of whom he was the chosen representative. This was followed with a well-written, popular and extended Address to the candidates, by a member of the Board of Examiners—Dr. J. G. Beckwith, of Litchfield. The speaker sustained the standing of his professional brethren in the State—in whose behalf he appeared. He glanced at the early history of this learned profession, named, in passing, with traits of character appropriate to each, several of the most eminent practitioners in the healing art—expatiated at full length upon "the moral dignity and elevation" of the Medical profession—followed by useful suggestions in reference to the difficulties and the encouragements incident to the initiation and earlier progress of every young physician—concluding with excellent and well-timed advice to abstinence from whatever would qualify their welcome access to patients, to families and to society—with the cultivation of those personal, social and moral accomplishments which, with the ordinary blessings of Providence, never fail to secure universal acceptance, esteem and confidence. And the wise hints, the judicious advice so seasonably as well as affectionately imparted to his younger brethren, we have the best reason to believe that the Doctor derived from his own practice and experience—in a life illustrative of the principles so felicitously advanced and earnestly urged. This merited tribute is from one who usually avails himself of the privilege of attendance on these occasions—but is in no way, except as a citizen and householder, connected with the medical profession.
A crowded audience, select, literary and "graced with beauty," retired from the Medical College, at the close in a high degree gratified.'
