A CHILD OUTRAGED.

Charles F. Barnett, a Fiend In Human Form, Assaults
a
Child of Six
Years Near Mill Creek.

Yesterday morning a most damnable outrage was perpetrated upon the person of little Nellie Myrtle Wyatt, a child of six years, by a brute in human form named Charles F. Barnett, aged 25 years, near Mill Creek.

The child had just left the house and gone out to the lot, when she was seized by Barnett and dragged into the crib, where he threw the child down and attempted his hellish purpose.

The screams of the child attracted her people, and the villain was caught before he could make his escape.

The father attempted to kill the fiend, but was later dissuaded from this by his wife and the prisoner was chained and a runner was dispatched after an officer. Deputy George Henry Bruce was sent for the prisoner.

By previous arrangement the officer met the prisoner and the guards at Rock crossing on Washita and immediately placed the fiend under arrest.

Cowering in the wagon bed, the villain begged for protection. He was in constant fear of being overtaken and mobbed.

Under the protection of Deputy Bruce the city was reached in safety and Barnett was placed in jail.

Herman Wyatt, the father of the injured child, has only been in the territory one year, coming here from Texas.

The neighbors who assisted in the capture of the fiend were A. W. Shuburg, I. Blackman, and Ed Ward. Those will remain here as witnesses and others will be here by Monday, at which time it is expected a preliminary hearing will be given Barnett by Commissioner Walcott.

The people in the Mill Creek community are to be commended for their prompt and effective action in bringing this guilty party to justice, where his reward will surely be meted out to him.
